Orlando | Cannabis Travel Destination
I spent a good deal of my childhood summers in Kissimmee, Florida, on my grandparents’ petting farm called Green Meadows. I know that sounds bizarre and is indeed a very strange way to grow up, but it’s true… the business that has been in my family for three generations is one of pony rides, milking cows, and feeding chickens. Tourism has always been in my blood, although I went down a bit of a different path than my brothers when I started smoking weed my freshman year of high school.
What I remember of Orlando is what we did with my grandparents: water parks (I’m ashamed to say my teenage male cousins would wait at the bottom of the biggest slide to see if anyone’s top flew off), Busch Gardens (where my grandparents and aunts would sneak away from the brats for a coveted adult beverage in the beer tent), Disney World, Universal Studios, Sea World. I’m going to be completely honest… I didn’t know Orlando had that much to offer for weed-smoking adults who don’t have a bunch of kids wearing Mickey ears in tow (totally fine if you’ve got that, too!). When we recently started our Puff, Pass & Paint classes in Orlando, I was introduced to another completely different city with a myriad of things to do, incredible restaurants, and a rich culture to enjoy, both sober and stoned.
Florida is a medical only state without reciprocity, so you cannot use your medical marijuana card from another state in a Florida medical dispensary. In our Puff, Pass & Paint classes, we provide federally legal cannabis for all guests to consume, and medical card holders can also bring their own. As per usual in states and countries that are not recreational, I can’t encourage you to travel with your own product, but as an adult making your own adult decisions, I trust you’ll do whatever the right thing is for you!
We’re holding our Orlando Puff, Pass & Paint classes in an adorable yoga spot called Park Life Yoga Studio, which offers small and personalized yoga classes outside in the sunshine when it’s nice out, and inside when that Florida sun and humidity is just too unbearable. Cannabis makes amusement parks and crowded places a bit more bearable for me, they’re not my first choice when planning a vacation.
A really cool spot to get a little bit of that creative and fun vacation experience is called Cafe Tu Tu Tango, which offers tapas and small plates with live entertainment like Michael Jackson impersonators, tango dancers, and live artists… in fact, our instructor April does live painting there every week! As a classic stoner, one of my favorite things to do when I travel is eat, and my favorite restaurant thus far is called Bao’s Castle, which is a wine bar in South Orange that offers an incredible selection of bao buns to share (or not). Gator’s Dockside is a great spot for watching sports and tasty bar food. Right down the street, my favorite smoke shop is Vapor Krew, which offers any kind of smoking supplies you might need and plenty of CBD/low THC items. Tori Tori is a great spot for Japanese bar food, with delicious sake and lots of options for meat skewers and small plates. Tako Cheena is the perfect combination of trendy restaurant and humble food truck, and offers Asian-influenced grub that focuses on fresh and locally-sourced ingredients in an upbeat and fun atmosphere.
If you’re looking for something a little more active in between your meals, Wekiwa Spring State Park is a gorgeous spot just 20 minutes outside of Orlando, with options for kayaking, swimming, hiking, and if you want to stay a night or two, campsites right on the water. There are plenty of spots for a private smoke break, and the wildlife and birds are just incredible… in fact, it feels like a secluded oasis far from the hustle and bustle of the city. Rent a bike and explore the Orlando Urban Trail, which takes you across two bridges and six lakes within Orlando proper. The Central Florida Zoo and Botanical Gardens is also an amazing place to pop an edible and wander around, especially during the winter months when it isn’t too hot outside. You can also book a free farm tour at Sativa University, which is one of Florida’s premier cannabis colleges, and offers both online and in-person, hands-on classes for growers and those looking to get into the industry.
Honestly, I was completely shocked at how much I enjoy Orlando as an adult… the weather is incredible, everyone is so helpful and friendly, and it’s booming with art, architecture, and creativity. It’s a city that is primed as a huge new cannabis destination, especially when Florida inevitably legalizes recreational cannabis in the next few years. Our instructor and artist April Hawkins said “I love the blurred lines between cannabis and art. People paint their version of art, I give them some encouragement and some tips. The beauty they create is their own, and I’m glad I am along for the ride.” As a city that boasts being one of the happiest places in the world, I’m inclined to agree! It’s definitely a spot worth checking out for yourself… come join our instructors April and Taylor for a Puff, Pass & Paint class while you’re there!
