GERMANY IMPORTS RECORD AMOUNT OF MMJ IN 2020
Germany saw a sharp rise in medical cannabis imports during 2020, importing 4,126 kilos in the first half of the year increasing to over 3 kilos in the final quarter alone. Demand for medicinal cannabis is growing in Germany, with an estimated 60,000 registered patients using medicinal cannabis. Until recently, imports came from Canada and the Netherlands exclusively. Facing recent shortages, the German Federal Institute for Drugs and Medical Devices authorized imports from Portugal, Spain and Denmark. Plans to develop domestic production of cannabis in 2021 are being delayed due to Covid. If the demand for medical cannabis continues to increase as it has over the past three years, Germany will most likely depend on some level of foreign cannabis to fuel its medical market for many years to come.
