Colorado Sold More Than Half A Billion Dollars In Legal Cannabis in Beginning of 2021
The first quarter of 2021 saw marijuana sales in Colorado surpass the $500 million mark, the state Department of Revenue (DOR) reported on Tuesday. Between January and March, marijuana sales totaled over $560 million. Since it became legal in Colorado in 2014, marijuana has been sold for more than $10.5 billion.
These sales generate more than $1.7 billion in tax income, which is used to fund local government initiatives like building infrastructure and public education. DOR combines the state's medical and recreational marijuana sales to create its monthly report on marijuana sales. Accessories for marijuana use and any other items that don't include medical marijuana are not included in the total.
Sales of marijuana totaled $207 million in only the month of March. The state received $39.6 million in taxes in return.
