Cannabis & Thanksgiving

Cannabis & Thanksgiving

Here are a few high thoughts about Thanksgiving. Whether you spend the day with your family, friends or alone, take the time to reflect on how blessed you truly are. Giving thanks, especially in times of hardship can be surprisingly rewarding for the spirit.

Did cannabis play a role at the first Thanksgiving?

It definitely did, but not in the way we would like to fantasize it did. Many of the sails and clothing that was used by the pilgrims would have been made out of hemp, but smoking it was most probably not a part of the celebration. The natives did smoke, but they used tobacco. The English Crown did mandate the cultivation of hemp in the new world, but this hemp was most likely destined for manufacturing.

Going for a walk before lunch

Going for a walk before Thanksgiving dinner is a classic stoner move, but did you realize that the walk does more than get you high? The body movement before dinner activates the digestive system to prepare you for a big meal. Imagine the walk as a modern day simulation of going out on a hunt. Obviously, the cannabis will give you more appetite, but don’t discount the value of the walk.

Thanksgiving Dinner Effect

When I first started smoking cannabis, I likened the effects to that of a post-thanksgiving dinner grogginess that I had experienced as a child. When I was young, they said that this sleepy, drowsy effect that we feel after Thanksgiving dinner was caused by the tryptophan in turkey… but it turns out that this isn’t true. It is caused by something called leaky gut syndrome. Our stomach acts like a balloon and when it is filled with food it stretches out. This stretching causes the stomach lining to become permeable, allowing bacteria to pass through. This bacteria enters the body, causing an immune response by the body that makes us feel lethargic, tired and drowsy. You will notice this feeling after any large meal, not just turkey dinner.

How to get the most out of your thanksgiving

  • Get nicely baked and don’t talk about the classic forbidden topics of politics, religion, or your investments like cryptocurrency or GameStop.

  • Prepare your plate once instead of going back and forth for extra. The first plate is always the best, so why not load it up the first time.

  • Don’t worry about saving room for dessert. Have a nap after lunch, wake and bake and then have your pie and coffee.

  • Take the opportunity to be thankful for the things you have, because there are people in the world without a joint to smoke on Thanksgiving. Remember, if you are getting high and feasting, life is good!
